Since the holidays fall on Tuesdays this year, would folks be available to get together on Wednesday, January 2nd?
If so, I would like to finish up the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game playtesting. We have two scenarios left to play. I expect that we should be able to get them in in a single session. I played them both solo and beat them without too much trouble. I would like to provide feedback from a multi-player perspective and on the game in general.
Things to think about:
What did you like about the game?
What did you not like about the game?
How do you think character advancement worked?
For the characters that you played, what did you think of the powers and power feats? How did you like the character's style of play? Did you notice differences between your character and other characters?

Adventure Paths starting to be PFS legal
Paizo has dipped their toes in sactioning Adventure Path material for PFS credit. They are starting with the RotRL Anniversary edition and the current Shattered Star APs. You can check out the announcement here: http://paizo.com/paizo/blog/v5748dyo5le7p?Sanctioning-Adventure-Paths-for-Pathfinder
I need to do more research but this sounds like an opportunity to expand our Tuesday Pathfinder offerings.

Mythic Adventures Playtest
Starting yesterday, Paizo opened up a new Pathfinder playtest for their next big rule book called Mythic Adventures. The playtest document is over 50 pages and covers a wide scope of the mythic concept. I have looked through it some and it would definitely be interesting for the right campaign.
You can check out the details at http://paizo.com/paizo/blog/v5748dyo5le2a?Mythic-Adventures-Playtest.

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game Playtest
I have the playtest cards, the playtest deck lists and a copy of the rules. I have sorted the cards but I have not yet built any of the decks. I will bring them all tonight.
The playtest only accomodates 6 players. If we have more than 6 people attend a session, we will have to buddy up and/or rotate play. If we have less, someone will have to double-up. Sounds like we can get multiple games in per session (2 or 3). We should try to play the same 6 characters throughout the playtest. We can switch around who plays them if we like. We have 11 to choose from. If we complete the first pass of the playtest we can always go back and retry parts that we have played with a different mix of characters.
We signed up for a 10 scenario playtest. The basic set also comes with 3 scenarios. We will likely play those with starting characters to get our feet wet. After that we will advance our characters and play the 10 scenarions for the adventure path. That covers two sections of the Rise of the Runelords. We will be starting with the most advanced characters as we received parts 5 and 6. The playtest period is scheduled to run about 6 weeks.
You should all have access to the playtest forums at https://secure.paizo.com/swallowtail/general. This was set up to match the e-mail related to your Paizo account. Your normal password will grant you access. You are encouraged to read and participate in these forums. I will be posting after game reports on behalf of the group but you can always discuss and expand on what the play.

5-foot Step
Because there was some confusion last game about 5-foot steps, I figured that we could discuss it here.
Per the CRB:
This should allow you to do things like make a full attack and kill an opponent with the first attack and then 5-foot step to complete the rest of your attacks on another foe. Another example is to cast a touch spell outside of a threatened range and then 5-foot step to deliver the free attack action granted by the spell. I believe that you can technically take a 5-foot step during a Cleave or Great Cleave but cannot attack a target which did not meet the adjacent requirement of the feat.
Per the CRB:
Take 5-Foot Step
You can move 5 feet in any round when you don’t perform any other kind of movement. Taking this 5-foot step never provokes an attack of opportunity. You can’t take more than one 5-foot step in a round, and you can’t take a 5-foot step in the same round that you move any distance.
You can take a 5-foot step before, during, or after your other actions in the round.
You can only take a 5-foot-step if your movement isn’t hampered by difficult terrain or darkness. Any creature with a speed of 5 feet or less can’t take a 5-foot step, since moving even 5 feet requires a move action for such a slow creature.
You may not take a 5-foot step using a form of movement for which you do not have a listed speed.
This should allow you to do things like make a full attack and kill an opponent with the first attack and then 5-foot step to complete the rest of your attacks on another foe. Another example is to cast a touch spell outside of a threatened range and then 5-foot step to deliver the free attack action granted by the spell. Argument: GO!
In reference to a character (npc or pc) gaining knowledge without the appropriate skill...
How is it that KS Religion and Spellcraft spontaneously grant a character KS Planes? All the skills are very clearly defined. There is NO mechanic in the game for Skill A + Skill B = Skill C. You may certainly argue a synergy bonus, say +2 or +4 from having so many ranks in Religion... but do they even do synergy anymore?
What is particularly irksome is how stingy we've been with knowledge of creatures in the past. "You got this number, you asked this question, that's it."
Arguing that a particular creature is on a Summon list is a more interesting and less irritating tact, but a slippery slope. If you follow that logic, every cleric or summoner in the game should know everything about all those monsters. So you get to summon a Xizzlick... how does this justify knowing their stats down to cock size (or lack thereof)? That seems hideously broken.
I would rule that if you CAN summon it (based on level restrictions) then you can know. Still seems a bit broken but that's compromise for you.

Alchemist Bombs
I am seeking advice on the Paizo forums for our Alchemist bomb vs. mirror image questions. I think we worked out most of it. The only part I am still questioning is what happens when a bomb successfully hits a figment. We will see what kind of answers come of my post.
Re-reading the bomb rules, I came upon a distinction that I want to make sure is clear.
Targeting a foe requires a ranged touch attack against the target's touch AC. A direct hit dealt damage as normal. A miss scatters in a random direction a number of squares equal to the range increment. If a target is in or adjacent to the square it hits, they take splash damage. That is minimum damage with a reflex save for half.
A grid intersection with an AC5 may be targeted instead of an opponent. If you hit, anyone in the 4 squares adjacent to the intersection take splash damage. If you miss, calculate scatter and splash damage as normal. You cannot target a grid intersection occupied by a large or bigger creature. If you want to target that intersection, you must target the creature. You may target an intersection next to a big creature.
Bombs cannot deal percision damage.

Paizo Card Game Playtest
Are we interested in playtesting a card game for Paizo? The details are here: http://paizo.com/forums/dmtz6nal
I think we could easily do the 10 session version. The 30 session version might stretch our abilities/availability.
It would be something different.
Toughts?

Funds are low again
Our Tuesday Fun Fund is getting low again. Not that we have any expected expenses currently but I thought that we should keep track of where we are at.
For your information, I have been tracking the latest contributions and expenses on the section to the top left of the screen.

Made a mistake
I made a mistake. The combat that we left off with last night is not finished. I missed part of the encounter in a wall of stat blocks. We will pick up where we left off. The only healing that should have been applied is the positive channel that Otis did before we broke.
If Kara and Corey are there next week I will figure a way to get them into the action. (I have an idea but we can discuss when folks arrive.) Corey would need to play a 7th level pregen and Kara will need to play Simone. Even with 7, the APL will still be under 9 so playing the 7-8 sub-tier is appropriate.

The Midnight Mirror for PFS Credit
I will be starting The Midnight Mirror for PFS credit tomorrow. It is a module for 3rd-5th level characters. This is likely to take the better part of three weeks to complete.
Based on your available characters:
Kara will be playing a Cleric (3rd). Corey will be playing a Cleric (3rd). Dave will be playing his Fighter/Bard (3rd). Bruce has his choise of Samurai, Magus or Inquisitor (5th/4th/4th). Steve has his choice of Rogue or Sorcerer (3rd/5th). Kelly has his choice of Barbarian/Sorcerer or Monk (both 3rd). David has his choice of an Oracle or Fighter (3rd/5th).

AFO Answers
Regarding Flaws:
You get one extra Style point if you take a Flaw during character creation. Characters may start play with only one Flaw but with the Gamemaster’s permission, you may add, change, or remove one during play.
I recommend taking a flaw but they are optional. They provide great role play opportunities and provide means to gather Style while playing.
Regarding Style:
All characters begin their careers with one Style point. You may start play with up to five total Style points. However, you have to do some extra work to earn them. Additional starting Style points may be earned in a variety of ways, always at the discretion of your Gamemaster.
At the end of each adventure, all Style points are lost. At the start of the next adventure, the character begins with Style points as described above. Players should not hoard Style points—they’re meant to be used!
* Taking a Flaw at character generation: 1 pt.
* Writing a character background: 1–3 pts.
* Creating a plot hook (e.g., a rival or dependent) for your character: 1 pt. each
* Using props or costumes for your character: 1 pt.
* Miscellaneous (e.g., hosting the game): 1 pt.
For example, Bruce would have 4 starting Style (1 just because, 1 for a Flaw, 1 for a character background and 1 for hosting). That is his Permanent Style which is the minimum that he will start each adventure with.
Additional temporary Style can be earned for the following:
* Pursuing your character’s Motivation: 1 pt.
* Succumbing to your character’s Flaw: 1 pt.
* Heroic actions (Cool Tricks, daring stunts, brave acts, etc.): 1 pt.
* In Character (Roleplaying, humor, etc.): 1 pt.
* Out of Character (Game report, diary, etc.): 1–3 pts. These points are earned at the start of the session the game report, diary, or whatever is handed to the GM.
* Miscellaneous (Hosting the game, bringing treats, etc.): 1 pt.
There is no limit to the number of Style points you can earn during play; however, to keep it from getting out of hand, the Gamemasters may limit you to earning five Style points per game session. (You will find that the flow of Style will lessen if you are not spending it.)
Exceptional game events, both good and bad, can change your Permanent Style rating.
Regarding Everyman Skills and Free Resources:
All Musketeer characters begin the game with Level 0 in Fencing or Melee, Firearms, and Ride. In addition, a hero may pick one additional Level 0 Skill fitting their background. Since all Musketeers are employed soldiers, they receive the Rank Resource at 0 for free during character generation. In addition, a Musketeer is a gentleman, and all gentlemen have servants, better known as lackeys. Thus, heroes also start with Followers at Level 0.
Church characters receive the same general benefits, but with a few differences. First, the only skill they must take is Academics: Religion. Beyond that, they are free to choose whatever Skills they like, though Linguistics should be seriously considered by any character who wishes to play a full priest, monk, or friar. Without the ability to speak Latin, characters are limited to lay positions. Ordained clergy are restricted to Rank 0, while monastic characters may only rise to Rank 1. Such characters are not full members of the clergy, and have yet to take their holy vows. They use the prefix “Lay” before their rank.
Otherwise, the character has free choice in his zero-level Skills. After all, the characters had a life, even if a short one, before entering the Church. Gamemasters should feel free to impose certain requirements or disallow certain Skill choices unless the player can provide good reason for his character to have them as Skills he learned during his formative years. Thus, while a retired soldier may have Firearms and Melee, they would be an unusual choice for a healer.
Second, all clerical characters must take Rank 0 as an absolute minimum. This is not negotiable—a character without Status is simply not a member of the Church. The other choice of zero-level Resource is up to the player, but again it should tie in the character’s personality and backstory. We strongly suggest the second Resource be a Lackey, but this is not compulsory. Members of a monastic order may not take the Status Resource to represent a noble title.
Note that all church characters have to take vows of chastity, obedience, and poverty to some degree. A character is not required to take the Vow Flaw, though; that Flaw is for characters who hold their vows in especial high regard and who may suffer as a result.

AFO Questions
Do we pick a flaw?
How much Style do we start with?
My character is a priest, not a Musketeer. Can my Rank be a level 0 in the Church? Or do all characters have to be Musketeers?

Forward planning
As I posted yesterday, I plan to finish running Storming the Diamond Gate next week. The week after that I would like to start The Midnight Mirror. This should take us through to near the end of October.
If you would like to take a break from PFS for a while, we need to get our AFO characters ready so we can play. Once we start the first module, Force Majeure, I figure it will be about 3 or 4 weeks of material. If we plan to start 11/6/12, can I get everyone's commitment to getting a character together? That should take us through November.
As far as PFS is concerned, we still have a bunch of material available. We need to play a couple more tier 3-7 or 5-9 scenarios before everyone has a character that will qualify to play the tier 7-11 material. Once we hit that point, I plan to run Portal of the Sacred Rune.
Besides that, here is a list of lower and mid-tier scenarios and modules that we have access to play:
Tier 1-5
Shades of Ice - Part I: Written in Blood
Shades of Ice - Part II: Exiles of Winter
Shades of Ice - Part III: Keep of the Huskarl King
Tide of Twilight
The Goblinblood Dead
Rise of the Goblin Guild (Bruce needs to run)
Tier 3-7
The Midnight Mauler
The Sanos Abduction
Tier 5-9
Our Lady of Silver
Sniper in the Deep
The Rebel's Ransom
The Heresy of Man - Part I: The First Heresy
The Heresy of Man - Part II: Where the Dark Things Sleep
The Heresy of Man - Part III: Beneath Forgotten Sands
You Only Die Twice
The Ghenett Manor Gauntlet
The Immortal Conundrum
The Haunting of Hinojai (Dave can run if Steve is not there)
The Golden Serpent (Dave can run if Steve is not there)
The Golemworks Incident
The Green Market
Tier 4-6
Dawn of the Scarlet Sun (1 XP – Bruce plans to run)
Tier 6-8
Realm of the Fellnight Queen
This list may change as some of us have been playing PFS at conventions and other venues making it more difficult to play/run certain scenarios on Tuesdays.
Player input on what types of games and/or characters that you would like to play would be appreciated.

Games in October
I expect to finish Storming the Diamond Gate next Tuesday. We only got through the first encounter last week. There are enough encounters left for those that missed last week to still earn full credit.
After that, while I would still like folks to work on their AFO characters so that we can finally play, I expect that I will try to run another module, The Midnight Mirror, for PFS credit. This module is playable by characters 3-5. I believe that everyone has at least one character that they can play.
I expect the module to take 3 or 4 weeks to play given our abilities to start on time and to get side tracked. That should take us through October or at least pretty close.

Goblins now PFS Legal*
To quote the updated Additional Resources, "To create a goblin character, you must have a Chronicle sheet that opens the race as a legal option at character creation."
This means that goblins will be joining PFS but they are not an always available race. Not sure where you can get such a chronicle sheet but I expect that they will be available at conventions and game days.

New Printer
I can order a new printer through work if we want.
Here is what I found while poking around:
HP Deskjet 3050A e-All-in-One Printer - J611g - $69.99 - Print, copy, scan. Wireless. Uses the same 61 cartrages as the old printer. I can get free shipping.
HP Deskjet 3000 Printer - J310a - $69.99 - Print. Wireless. Uses the same 61 cartrages as the old printer. I can get free shipping.
I also found the same printer as we had before, HP Deskjet 1000 Printer - J110a, for $29.99 but the shipping is not free.
We can also poke around locally. We just need to decide on how much we want to spend.

New Adventure for Leagues of Adventure Released
A new adventure for Leagues of Adventure, Dreaming Spires, was released today. It is the first part of a multi-part set of adventures. I would like to run this in the near future so start thinking about your character concepts. Think Victorian Era steampunk.
A copy of the latest Leagues of Adventure character creation cheatsheets is located on my website at: https://sites.google.com/site/zombiehomepage/Home/zombie-s-leagues-of-adventure-page.
I am also ready to run All For One. The first adventure is Force Majeure.
At this point, you all still need characters. I have printed several pre-made character if you do not have the time or desire to create your own.
A copy of the latest All For One character creation cheatsheets is located on my website at: https://sites.google.com/site/zombiehomepage/Home/zombie-s-all-for-one-page. This file also has a listing of sample Lackeys and the source where they are located. I have copies of all the books and source material.

Five Talons of the Jade Dragon PDF Released
The HEX adventure, Five Talons of the Jade Dragon, has been released as a PDF. This is the last adventure which the group performed playtesting. As promised, your names appear in the credits. Check it out below:
This adventure will also be appearing in the Perils of the Surface World hardcover that will be published later this year.
This adventure will also be appearing in the Perils of the Surface World hardcover that will be published later this year.
Next Tuesday
I will finish up the Feast of Ravenmoor next week. I expect that we need another hour to conclude the adventure and do paperwork.
I will also have Storming the Diamond Gate prepared to run. It is a PFS scenario for characters 3-7. Depending on what tier you plan to play, I believe that everyone has at least 2 characters that will qualify for play. (I was expecting to run this at the 6-7 sub-tier as I would like to get everyone to a point where we can play some tier 7-11 adventures but if you want to play lower sub-tier we can make that work too.)
Kelly, Kara and Dave all have a character that is 1 XP from 7th (Dave also has one at 9th). Bruce has one that is 2 XP away (but he has another already at 8th) and Corey has one that is 3 XP away.
If we play the higer sub-tier I think the party would be:
Elise - Witch (6) - Bruce
Fantasticleez - Cavalier (6) - Dave
Karorgrarbag - Sorcerer (5) - Steve
Simone Dickenson - Bard (6) - Kara
Phi-Torr - Fighter (6) - Corey
Zaldon - Fighter (5) or Al goBoom - Alchemist (7) - David
Frabbl - Druid (5)/Bard (1) - Kelly

Perils of the Surface World Kickstarter
There is only a few more days for the Perils of the Surface World Kickstarter. If anyone is interested, they have opened up dice and style chips to the kickstarter for any pledges of $40 or more. They are also offering free PDFs for any hard copy book pledge. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2085348754/perils-of-the-surface-world/posts/304770
I believe that both Corey and myself have made pledges that qualify. If anyone is interested in just Ubiquity dice or Surface World style chips, we can add $6 for dice and $25 for chips per set to our pledges. If you are interested, I would like to know by Tuesday night.

Next Tuesday - Best of both worlds
I have a Pathfinder module, Feast of Ravenmoor, that I can start next week. It is meant for 3rd level characters but it can be played with PFS characters 2nd-4th. I can run that for PFS credit for a few weeks until everyone gets their All For One characters sorted out.
By Tuesday, I think that everyone should have at least one character that will qualify to play and it should be a fair party mix. You would get the module/adventure feel with PFS credit.
Thoughts?

Thanks Dave
Thank you Dave for running PFS last night. It was fun.
If anyone else ever wants to try their hand at running, just let me know. We have a ton of scenarios available.

Plan for PFS Next Week
Either Dave or I will be running a PFS scenario next week.
Who runs will depend upon who shows up. Make sure that you bring your characters, books, dice etc.
If we want to play other games, people need to make characters. All For One is next on my list. If you cannot make a character or have no interest, there are 11 sample characters in the rulebook and 5 more in an expanded character supplement. I will print copies and have them available for review. If you have a concept, there may be a character already made in another supplement. Let me know what you are thinking.
I have an adventure prepared which should take 3 to 4 weeks to play. I have four more after that but I will need to read them. We can play the first one and see how folks like it. If you want to change characters or make your own you can at that point.

Our War Chest is Empty Again
We have exhausted our Tuesday game funds again. We used it to fund ink for the printer and several PFS scenarios.
It looks like we may want to invest in another printer in the near future as the one we have is starting to go flakey (misfeeding sheets and ink smudges). Dave and I discussed and we think we should try to live with it until we run out of the current ink supply. We should be able to get a reasonable replacement for under $40.
That said, we should start another collection to refund our war chest. It is not an emergency but it will be looming. Just please keep it in mind.

Next week and beyond
Since it is post-Gen Con and we are expecting to be back to normal next week, what do we want to play?
As far as I know, everyone (our current 7 "regular" players) all plan to attend.
Our options include:
- I can run the conclusion of the HEX adventures that I ran at Gen Con and you can see how the story ends. (I really appreciate your helping me playtest and the feedback has been very helpful.)
- I can run one of the HEX official published adventures. You could play pregens or make your own characters but these appear to be one-shot adventures which will take a couple sessions each to play. I am not quite ready to pick up our campaign again but that is very likely in the future as I will be working on more HEX material which will be perfect for them.
- I can run All For One. I have a module ready to run but everyone needs to make a character and a Lackey. (I expect that this will take more than a week's lead time to get everyone prepared.) This should take about 3 weeks to play.
- Similarly, I can run Leagues of Adventure. I have two short adventures for this Victorian Era steampunk style HEX-like game. I believe that these would cover a few weeks of gaming but everyone needs to make a character and a Henchman. (I expect that this will take more than a week's lead time to get everyone prepared.)
- I can run PFS. We would need to decide what level scenario that we want to and/or can play so that I can have one prepared.
- I have a total of 6 tier 1-5 scenarios from seasons 2, 3 and 4 which can be run with whatever group attends.
- I have a total of 2 tier 3-7 scenarios from season 3. One was originally a exclusive for tier 1-7 that was reworked and rereleased as a season 3 scenario and the other has to do with the pocket dimension.
- I have a total of 11 tier 5-9 scenarios. They span across seasons 0 to 4. These include a pretty different one from the end of season 2 as well as a three parter also from season 2.
- Because a few playes still do not have a character of 7th level or higher, we cannot yet play any 7-11 tier scenarios.
- I also have some Pathfinder modules which I can run. This includes Master of the Fallen Fortress which is meant for brand new PFS characters. It would take a night to play. Crypt of the Everflame is for 1st-2nd level characters (only Bruce has played it and not for PFS credit), Feast of Ravenmoor is for 2nd-4th level characters and the Midnight Mirror is for 3rd-5th level characters. Each module would take approximately 3 weeks to play.
If anyone else is dying to run, we can play what they have in mind.
GM Fun Fact: I have gotten to play in 11 PFS scenarios/modules between Gen Con 2011 and Gen Con 2012 as compared to 2 PFS scenarios between Gen Con 2010 and Gen Con 2011 and 0 PFS scenarios between Gen Con 2009 and Gen Con 2010.

Change of Venue for 7/17/12
Next week we will be holding the game at Daren and Kara's house. For those who do not know or remember, they live at 333 Massoit, Clawson, MI.
This change is temporary. Bruce's has a new work schedule. He is hoping to be on days but he will let us know if there is a continued conflict. If so, we will make longer-term plans. I know that Bruce, Steve and Kevin will not be there for sure this week.
To keep things simple this week, I will be running a HEX agventures with pregen characters. I will print them and provide. This will not be one of my Gen Con scenarios but likely a Free RPG Day adventure or one plucked from Mythic Eras. I gathered up my HEX books and accessories but did not grab anything else that belong to any of you.

BLATT-sight
Selective Channeling (page 132): Do I have to be able to see a creature in order to exclude them from the effect of my channeled energy?
Just like using a Target: creature spell, you
must be able to see or touch a creature to affect it (or, in the case of
this feat, select it to be unaffected). Pinpointing the square of an
invisible creature isn't sufficient—you must be able to see or touch the
creature.
Note that this works differently than an
alchemist's precise bombs discovery, which allows the alchemist to
exclude *squares* from his bomb's splash area (not targets).
—Sean K Reynolds,
Empowered Raymond
Empower Spell (page 122): If I use Empower Spell on a spell that has a die roll with a numerical bonus (such as cure moderate wounds), does the feat affect the numerical bonus?
Yes. For example, if you empower cure moderate wounds, the +50% from the feat applies to the 2d8 and to the level-based bonus.

Tonight
I am not quite ready to run the playtest for my Gen Con HEX scenarios tonight. I will be running the PFS scenario Wonders in the Weave—Part I: The Dog Pharaoh's Tomb. This adventure and Wonders in the Weave—Part II: Snakes in the Fold set the stage (at least story-wise) for several other adventure later in the season. There are at least 5 more that revolve around the story elements.
It is Tier 5-9 adventure. Most of you will only have one option for which character to play. If everyone shows up, the APL will work out to 7, which allows you to choose to play the 5-6 or the 8-9 sub-tiers.

The Quest for Perfection—Part III: Defenders of Nesting Swallow Chronicle Corrected
The chronicle for Pathfinder Society Scenario #3-13: The Quest for Perfection—Part III: Defenders of Nesting Swallow has been corrected. They have fixed the Braid of a Hundred Masters.
The corrected item is now:
Braid of a Hundred Masters
(5,200 gp; If the wearer of this necklace has levels in monk, his fast movement and unarmed damage are treated as a monk of 3 levels higher. If the character is not a monk, he gains the fast movement and unarmed damage of a 3rd-level monk. This fast movement functions just like the monk’s fast movement class feature. These bonuses do not stack with those granted by other items or effects. In addition, as a swift action three times per day, a character with the flurry of blows class feature can use the Braid of a Hundred Masters to apply 1-1/2 times his Strength bonus on damage rolls for successful attacks made with flurry of blows. This ability must be activated before the damage from the attack is rolled, though it may be activated after the attack roll is made and before the damage roll. Once this ability is activated, its effect lasts for 1 round.)
I can supply updated chronicles if anyone is interested. I will print them off and bring them on Tuesday.

Pathfinder Online Game
The folks trying to create a Pathfinder MMORPG earned $64,646 (of the $50,000 needed) of their starting money in less than 24 hours of opening the Kickstarter page. In fact they got another $200 while i was typing this note. They should have just crowd-sourced the whole project with all the interest they got.

Next few weeks
I expect that we have two more weeks before completing the Ruby Phoenix Tournament. My estimate is based upon how things have gone so far. (I'm not sure how this could be expected to be run in 10 hours or so.)
After that is done, I plan to take a break from Pathfinder for a while. I would like to playtest my Gen Con HEX scenarios. I have the high level plot and crunchy bits of the adventures worked out. I do not have the detailed write-up finished. I am currently working on the player characters. I am asking everyone to play a pregenerated character that I will supply. Over the course of the 4 adventures you will have the opportunity of playing 3 or 4 different characters.
The goal is to play each adventure in a single session but I am expecting there will be some time wasting and it will likely take 6 weeks for us to finish all of the material.
After that I would really like to run All For One. This will require everyone to have a player character and a lackey. I know that Bruce, Dave and David have been working on their guys but I have not heard anything from the rest of the group. I do not want to waste a game session just to work on characters if we can help it. The first adventure will take us 3 to 4 weeks to play.
That leaves about 3 or 4 "open" game sessions between now and Gen Con. What would you guys like to do to fill those?

Trip Weapons
The only advantage to trip weapons is that if you fail your trip attempt by 10 or more, you have the option of dropping the weapon instead of tripping yourself: You dont get to deal damage AND trip.
Trip Weapons: If you want to make a trip combat maneuver, do you have to use a weapon with the trip special feature?
No. When making a trip combat maneuver, you
don't have to use a weapon with the trip special feature--you can use
any weapon. For example, you can trip with a longsword or an unarmed
strike, even though those weapons don't have the trip special feature.
Note that there is an advantage to using a weapon with the trip special feature (a.k.a. a "trip weapon") when making a trip combat maneuver: if your trip attack fails by 10 or more, you can drop the trip weapon instead of being knocked prone.
Note that there is an advantage to using a weapon with the trip special feature (a.k.a. a "trip weapon") when making a trip combat maneuver: if your trip attack fails by 10 or more, you can drop the trip weapon instead of being knocked prone.
On a related note, you don't have to use a weapon
with the disarm special feature (a.k.a. a "disarm weapon") when making a
disarm combat maneuver--you can use any weapon.
Note: This is a revision of this FAQ entry based on a Paizo blog
about combat maneuvers with weapons. The previous version of this FAQ
stated that using a trip weapon was the only way you could apply weapon
enhancement bonuses, Weapon Focus bonuses, and other such bonuses to the
trip combat maneuver roll. The clarification in that blog means any
weapon used to trip applies these bonuses when making a trip combat
maneuver, so this FAQ was updated to omit the "only trip weapons let you
apply these bonuses" limitation.

Ruby Phoenix Tournament
Things got into full swing last night. Based upon some further reading, I have a few notes about the Ruby Phoenix Tournament and Performance Combat:
- The group currently has 5 victory points.
- For this module, the party must have 3 victory points each to get the bump from indifferent starting crowd level to friendly. This is different from the rule from Ultimate Combat, p.157.
- As written, the party can only do performance combat for bouts held in the Grand Pavilion. (I have a document that list information for the exhibitions. I may or may not use that.)

Conquest Day 4712 AR Boon
Another holiday boon is upon us. Check it out at http://paizo.com/paizo/blog/v5748dyo5ldah?Conquest-Day It seems like a pretty cool one.
I will be filling out and passing out the boons tomorrow for those in attendance. If you miss next week, you will have two more weeks to attend before this one expires.

PFS Adventure Tracking
I posted the updated PFS adventure tracking spreadsheet on my website. It can be found under the attachments section of page https://sites.google.com/site/zombiehomepage/Home/zombie-s-d-d-pathfinder-page. As far as I know the information is correct. Please review and provide any updates that may be required for your characters.

Warhorse Markers
What do you think of these Warhorse markers? http://www.litko.net/products/Warhorse%2C-Character-Mount-Marker-kit.html Is this something we might use? Would you find them easier than the horse minis I have used in the past?
I already ordered some door markers (http://paizo.com/products/btpy8rd3?Dungeon-Door-Markers), some portcullis (http://paizo.com/products/btpy8qmt?Dungeon-Door-Markers-Portcullis) and some square flight bases (http://paizo.com/products/btpy8e2c?Flying-Figure-Stands-1-Square) through Paizo. The horses do not appear to be available from Paizo so I would have to order directly from Litko.

Danger 5
Check this out. http://www.sbs.com.au/danger5/videos.html
I looks right for all the wrong reasons.
I was able to watch the 5-part The Diamond Girls. Four full episodes just came out on DVD today but it was released in Australia. I am not sure that I am willing to commit to a $40 investment. Also I am not sure if my Blu-ray player will play it. Also not sure if they will post/re-post episodes on-line.
Looks like it is available from iTunes for $3 per episode. Maybe I can get it there.

Looks like it is available from iTunes for $3 per episode. Maybe I can get it there.
PFS Scenario next week?
I think I would like to get in another scenario in for my monk to which I will be assigning credit for the Ruby Phoenix Tournament. That would get him to 3rd level and earn him more money for the module chronicle.
Since Kara will be gone next week, does anyone object to me running a tier 1-7 scenario next week? I have one from each of seasons 0-2 that I have yet to run. I expect that I can get it completed in a single session, especially if I run one of the early season scenarios.

Attacks of Opportunity....
...you don't get em if you're flat-footed.
I didn't stumble across this RAW, but caught it in the text of Combat Reflexes:
Benefit: You may make a number of additional attacks of opportunity per round equal to your Dexterity bonus. With this feat, you may also make attacks of opportunity while flat-footed.
Another reason to take Improved Initiative

PFS harder in Season 4
According to today's Paizo blog, PFS scenarios will be made more difficult starting with Season 4. The design assumption will be 6 players rather than four.
Season 4 launches at Gen Con 2012. The full blog/forum post can be found at http://paizo.com/paizo/blog/v5748dyo5ld8i?Six-Sells
Thus, beginning in Season 4, all Pathfinder Society scenarios will be designed with six PCs in mind, effectively increasing the CR of all encounters to accommodate larger parties. Each adventure will provide specific changes to apply for parties of four PCs, maintaining consistency in how the scenarios are altered, but giving a bit more latitude to account for table variance. Because five- and seven-person tables are both reasonably equipped to handle a six-person challenge, tables of both sizes should be run without any changes.I like the change and I think it will play well with our home game. where we commonly have 5-7 players. Season 0-3 scenarios will not be modified at this time.

Flurry of Blow correction in the works
Check out these Paizo forum posts:
http://paizo.com/forums/dmtz5dte?Sean-K-Reynolds-clarifies-Flurry-of-Blows#1
http://paizo.com/forums/dmtz5drg&page=3?Attacking-with-a-weapon#144
It looks like the intention is that the monk needs to use multiple attack sources, at least two, when delivering a flurry. This would mean that some thing like the temple sword could be used as part of a flurry but not as the only source of the flurry.
Lots of debate still but it looks like Paizo is going to make an official errata/correction to the mechanic sometime soon.

PFS Milestone
We have hit a milestone for our home PFS game. Everyone in the group now has a character that is 5th level or higher. This now opens Tier 5-9 scenarios for our playing pleasure. We currently have 15 of them from seasons 0-3 waiting in the wings.
Mounts in Pathfinder
Nast night I was struggling with the differences between an animal companion and a mount. The animal companion rules are just the mechanics for creating the special animals that characters receive as part of their class abilities. What the animals can and will do is still based upon the tricks the animal knows and the character using his Handle Animal skill. If an animal is trained as a mount it is easier to ride (DC10 vs. DC25) and if it is trained for combat it is easier to control (DC10 and free action vs. DC20 and move action).
I did some reading on the subject and here are my conclusions.
If an animal is being used as a mount, companion or otherwise, it will act according to the mount rules. Without a rider to guide it, a mount avoids combat. Meaning, if you are out of the saddle and not actively commanding it, it will only participate in a fight to defend itself. The exception is if the animal is trained to Defend. In that case, it will stand its ground and also defend the fallen rider.
I assume that combat mounts have the General Purpose of Combat Training. This means that the mount knows the following 6 tricks requiring a DC 10 Handle Animal check (DC 12 if the animal is injured) to execute :

I assume that combat mounts have the General Purpose of Combat Training. This means that the mount knows the following 6 tricks requiring a DC 10 Handle Animal check (DC 12 if the animal is injured) to execute :
- Attack - The animal attacks apparent enemies. You may point to a particular creature that you wish the animal to attack, and it will comply if able. Normally, an animal will attack only humanoids, monstrous humanoids, or other animals. Teaching an animal to attack all creatures (including such unnatural creatures as undead and aberrations) counts as two tricks. (This can be purchased with an animal companion’s extra tricks.)
- Come -The animal comes to you, even if it normally would not do so.
- Defend - The animal defends you (or is ready to defend you if no threat is present), even without any command being given. Alternatively, you can command the animal to defend another specific character.
- Down - The animal breaks off from combat or otherwise backs down. An animal that doesn’t know this trick continues to fight until it must flee (due to injury, afear effect, or the like) or its opponent is defeated.
- Guard - The animal stays in place and prevents others from approaching.
- Heel - The animal follows you closely, even to places where it normally wouldn’t go.
According to the Ride skill, some checks are required to ride a mount in combat.
- Guide with Knees: You can guide your mount with your knees so you can use both hands in combat. Make your Ride check at the start of your turn. If you fail, you can use only one hand this round because you need to use the other to control your mount. This does not take an action. DC 5
- Fight with a Combat-Trained Mount: If you direct your wartrained mount to attack in battle, you can still make your own attack or attacks normally. This usage is a free action. DC 10
To fight from the back of a combat trained mount with a two-handed weapon, expecting both you and the mount to attack, requires a DC 5 Ride check (Knees), a DC 10 Handle Animal check (command mount to attack) and a DC 10 Ride check (mount and you both able to attack) each round.
Mounted combat things to remember:
- When you attack a creature smaller than your mount that is on foot, you get the +1 bonus on melee attacks for being on higher ground.
- If your mount moves more than 5 feet, you can only make a single melee attack.
- If your mount charges, you also take the AC penalty associated with a charge. If you make an attack at the end of the charge, you receive the bonus gained from the charge.
- You can use ranged weapons while your mount is taking a double move, but at a –4 penalty on the attack roll. You can use ranged weapons while your mount is running (quadruple speed) at a –8 penalty. You can make a full attack with a ranged weapon while your mount is moving.
We can debate the topic further if necessary but I would prefer to do so here rather than during the game session.

New AFO page
I am making preparation for the start of our All For One campaign. I created a new web site to keep track of the campaign particulars. It can be found at https://sites.google.com/site/zombiehomepage/Home/zombie-s-all-for-one-page.
Not much here yet but I will fill it in as we get characters and lackeys created. I can post origins and other character related materials like we have done with our HEX games.

Tomorrow
I appear to have recovered and will be running tomorrow. he plan is to complete the PFS scenario we started a few weeks ago, The Quest for Perfection—Part II: On Hostile Waters.
If we finish and time permits, we will start The Quest for Perfection—Part III: Defenders of Nesting Swallow.

Our Piggy Bank is Empty
With the purchase today of the latest two PFS scenarios, our pool of money for Gaming supplies is currently empty.
We had a fund of $40. Dave and David each donated $20 each. We used that to purchase plastic forks and 9 PFS scenarios. I also purchased an ink cartrage for the printer out of my pocket. It sounds like Dave has done so again.
I just wanted to bring this to the attention of the group. I am not saying that you need to kick in money or, if you do, how much, but I wanted to let you know that the fund is now empty.

AFO Question - Answer according to Nestor
Bruce asked the other night what the difference was between a thrust and slash attack for Fencing Style modifiers. I did not have an answer other than I expected that the type of weapon might factor in.
I decided to ask a rules expert, Nestor, and here was his response:
That's a very common question. The quickest answer I can give you is that it's the same difference as between a punch and a kick. :-)
In other words, there is no strict mechanical difference; both do the same amount of damage. The difference is mainly circumstantial and stylistic. There are situations where a slash would be difficult to do (small enclosed space), for instance.
In actual play, there is nothing to prevent a player from describing all his attacks as thrusts to use the advantage of his Fencing Style (after all, that's what he'd do "in real life"). Of course, I'd look askance at an attempt to do a Sweep maneuver with a thrust. ;-)

Hero Labs tablet support report..
(from Hero Labs website)
Tablet Support
As you know from our previous postings, we had hoped to make significant progress on creating products for tablets by this point. Unfortunately, our development work on the Mac versions took much longer than we expected, which stymied our plans in 2011. Tablet versions of our products are still an important part of our product roadmap, and we expect to get fully underway this year.
After the release of Army Builder for the Mac, we’ll be working on the first of our tablet projects. Our first tablet product will be a version of Hero Lab designed for use during play as an electronic character sheet. From there, we'll expand into more complete versions of our products. Our target is to have an early version by Gen Con 2012 that we can show off.
As we’ve shared in the past, our strategy for the tablet market is to pick one platform for the initial releases. Since each platform has profound differences from the others when it comes to software development, major portions of the code written for one platform will need to be completely rewritten for the other platforms. This limitation is the primary reason we’ll be starting with one platform and then addressing others. We simply don’t have the resources to address all the platforms at the same time.
We're closely monitoring the market to see what's being released and how well each new product is received, and we have not yet chosen which platform we'll embrace first. We expect to make our choice in the upcoming months. Once we make our initial selection, we'll be sure to let everyone know, so stay tuned for future announcements and feel free to lobby for your favorite platform on our support forums.

Next Tuesday
As of right now I am still planning on running PFS next week. That said, I am still having issues with my vision. I am seeing distortions from my left eye (even when closed) on a periodic basis. It comes and goes. It makes reading and typing difficult. Makes it hard to work and also enjoy my downtime.
It has been going on for the last week and a half and it does not appear to be getting better on its own. I have been to the eye doctor twice and he has not discovered anything. His initial diagnosis is a Retinal Migraine. No course of treatment offered from his perspective. He will consult with my regular doctor who is out until Monday. I may have to schedule doctor visits, tests and possibly hospital time depending on what they find. I just do not know at this point.
If I am not able to attend, this is my fair warning to have a Plan B.

Beyond PFS
After we complete the Ruby Phoenix PFS stuff in mid to late March, I was considering starting an All For One game.
This will mean that everyone will need to create a main character and a lackey. You play the main character and someone else at the table plays the lackey. I have a copy of the main rules, a paris supplement and many small supplements with additional character material. I also helped compile the most recent character creation cheat sheets and will see if I can get another update before we start to play. Based upon our resources, we may need to have a session dedicated to create characters.
I have 5 complete adventures for this game and could likely run for 4 or 5 months with that material. I do not need to run it consecutively. The first adventure is stand alone but the next four are connected.
I would also like to use the group to playtest the scenarios I expect to run at Gen Con. These will be HEX and will take a night each to run. There maybe some spillover based upon when we start but each is expect to fill a 4 hour slot. I have 4 adventures to design and playtest. These will be run with pregen characters like they would be at the con. Part of the testing is testing the character builds. I am still working on the adventures. I hope to have them in a playable state by sometime in April or May.
The only drawback is that if we play them before the con, you would not be able to enjoy them at the con. I figure that is not an issue for most of you but I wanted to put it out there.
We can also sprinkle in some PFS to keep the advancement going. (We are almost to the point where we can play tier 5-9. Just need to finish the current scenario and play one more for Corey.)

Next Week
It looks like we will be down to a maximum of 4 players next week. Dave has to cancel.
Should we plan to play PFS and maybe invite Matt F or do we want to do something else? Bruce's game, board game, etc.

PFS Adventure Tracking
I have posted my PFS adventure tracking spreadsheet for our home games. The Scenario Tracking tab shows the scenarios/modules the player has run and/or played. The Character Tracking tab shows the class, level and XP of a particular character. This information is as accurate as I can make it based upon what I know. If you play somewhere else, you would have to tell me so that I can adjust the document.

More Ruby Phoenix Info
The Ruby Phoenix Tournament uses the Performance Combat mechanic from Ultimate Combat, pp.153-157. Basically it is a mechanic used to sway the crowd and to earn Victory Points.
Performance Combat rolls are determed by your CHA bonus plus derived bonuses based upon your BAB and the highest ranks in Perform:Act, Perform:Comedy or Perform:Dance.
May make a Performance Combat check when:
Swift Actions
Charge
Make successful Combat Maneuver
Max base damage on Weapon or Spell
Using an Energy Spell or Effect
Perform successful Feint
Knock opponent prone
2 or more successful attacks in a full attack sequence
Free/Immediate Actions
Confirm critical hit
Draw first blood of the combat
First time entering rage in combat
Vanquish opponent
Must make a Performance Combat check when (No action required):
Use Magical healing
Roll natural 1 on attack roll or saving throw
Use withdraw action
Keep this in mind when selecting your character to artifically advance. This may impact your decision on which character to play.

The Next Several Weeks
I plan to run PFS for the next several weeks.
I will be starting with a three part story which has linked scenarios; The Quest for Perfection—Part I: The Edge of Heaven, The Quest for Perfection—Part II: On Hostile Waters and The Quest for Perfection—Part III: Defenders of Nesting Swallow. These scenarios take place before the Ruby Phoenix Tournament.
Characters that play through all three parts get a special boon as part of the third Chronicle. I expect this boon to be of interest to many players. These are Tier 1-5 adventures. I expect you will be playing at sub-tier 4-5.
That said I expect the party to be made up of the following:
Bruce - Jack - Samurai (3rd w/8XP)
Dave - Fantasticleez - Cavalier (2nd w/5XP)
Steve - Karorgrarbag - Sorcerer (3rd w/6XP)
Kelly - Fabbl - Druid/Bard (3rd/1st w/11XP)
David - Al goBoom - Alchemist (5th w/12XP)
Kara - Simone - Bard (5th w/12XP)
Corey - Phi-torr - Fighter (4th w/10XP)
If everyone attends, that is an APL of 4.7. There is no cleric or rogue but many characters have at least CLW on their spell list. If folks want to go with lower level characters, we can always play the lower sub-tier.
When we are finished with these I will run the module, Ruby Phoenix Tournament. The events take place after the Quest for Perfection scenarios. Because of changes to the PFS rules, this will be our only chance to play this module for PFS credit using the old module rules. We have until 3/16/12 to get this done. For this you will need to choose one of your existing PFS characters. You may artificially level up that character to 11th level. This version of your character may have up to 82,000 gp in total wealth and may not spend more than 41,000 gp on a single item. This version of your character will not have any PP and cannot have benefited from any previous PP expenditures. You have a few weeks to decide but you should plan ahead especially if you want Dave or someone else to help you create you leveled up character.
This character need not be the same character that you played through The Quest for Perfection. Completion of the module, assuming you make all the sessions and do not die, withh result in 3XP and 4 PP. There is the possibility for some cool boons and a very lengthy chronicle sheet. Gold earned will be determined by the actual level of the character that was artificially leveled.
Once we are done with this, everyone should have at least one 5th or higher level character. I can then run Wonders in the Weave—Part I: The Dog Pharaoh's Tomb and Wonders in the Weave—Part II: Snakes in the Fold. These are tier 5-9 scenarios. The events in these take place after the Ruby Phoenix Tournament. There is also a special boon for playing these in order in consecutive sessions with the same character. It remains to be seen how useful this boon will prove.

It remains to be seen how useful this boon will prove.

Tomorrow
Bruce will be running Serpent Skull tomorrow.
One the PFS front, we are two lower-tier scenarios away from being able to play some Tier 5-9. Coery still needs 2 XP for Phi-Torr to hit 5th. Kelly needs 1 XP for Frabbl to hit 5th. Everyone else either has a 5th or 6th level guy.
Does anyone else want to take a crack at running a scenario besides Bruce and myself? I have plenty of scenarions that I have not read. If you GM you still get full XP, Fame/PP and Gold. You do not however get day job rolls or boons.

What do we plan to do next Tuesday?
What is the game plan for next Tuesday? Are we continuing with Bruce's game, Dave's game or should I plan to run some more PFS? If I am running, I have a module for 2-4th level PFS characters I can run.
