Hollow Earth Expedition

Well, I ran a session of the Hollow Earth Expedition. I would like some feed back on what you thought.

Did you like the game concept (Pulp adventure in the center of the earth during the 1930's)?

Did you like the system? It is a bit simplistic but that is one of its charms. Not a ton of rules to contend with. Not a very tactical system. i.e. a game mat is not required.

The game is meant to be very role playing oriented. Character interaction is important.

I like the game and I would like to run it some more. With that in mind we have several options.

1) Continue to run one session short adventures. I have several published adventures (at least 6).

2) Run a short campaign, likely 4-8 sessions with one major story and a sub-plot or two.

3) Run a long campaign, open ended game with several major stories.

Once we decide that, we need to deterine what kind of game you would like to play. For example:

1) high combat - characters are part of a military organization out to complete an objective (a la Aliens, Escape from New York or Saving Private Ryan)
2) exploration - an exploration party determined to unlock the secrets of something which leads them to the unexpected and unexplained (a la Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park or King Kong)
3) castaway - Group of strangers from various walks of life that find themselves stranded and unprepared for what awaits. The main goal is to find a way home. (a la Gilligan's Island or Lost)
4) episodic - characters make controlled sorties into the Hollow Earth to complete objectives (a la Star Gate or Sliders)

I am open to your thoughts. Tailoring the game to your expectations and the types of character that you want to play should make it more enjoyable for everyone.

  1. I enjoyed the game though I would prefer to make my oen character. I vote for lost in the underearth rather than episodic , high combat of the rest.

  2. I too would like to make my own toon, like Velocibecky (dibs btw).
as for style I would prefer #2 exploration. Especially if we go the roleplaying route (which I would also prefer).

  4. Making your own characters is not a problem. I expected that this was the way folk might want to go. The only agvantage of the one-off game is that there would not be a long term investment/commitment.

So if I read you right, Randy wants a castaway story with high combat and Bruce wants an exploration story. Jennifred does not want to play this game.

Any ideas on the type of campaign? Short or Long?

How about types of characters? What types of people do you want to be?

  5. For the first option, Im good with any of the styles so long as we get to play the same characters throughout.

For the 2nd option I'm good with any except the high combat one.

For character concept I'm looking at someone between Golden Age Sandman and Harry Dresden.

  6. Dave,

Wesley Dodds, mystery man? Normal guy with an connection to the dream realm. He was a vigilante detective with prophetic dreams. He had a gadget or two as well (gas gun, gas mask, tools, etc.). Dresden is the character from the Dresden Files? Not familiar but I get the concept per se.

That seem like it could work but it will take some experience to build up to more powerful characters. I still need to read the new source book which has expanded magic, psionics and wierd science. Typical experience is about 3 to 5 points per session and it takes about 15 points to buy anything good. You may be able to start with magic but I imagine it will not be very strong. I will do more reading and let you know.

If I read you correctly, you want to play short to medium stories using the same characters from story to story. You are looking for medium action with a lower character mortality rate.

    Did I get you right?

  8. I'm ok with whatever, although one steady character makes it more fun to play as you get to watch it develop. Are alignments optional?

  9. Ah
I see the confusion here Keith. The last few words of my earlier post should read "high combat or the rest." not "high combat of the rest."

I would prefer to do searching or lost and a short initial run. I too prefer RPG rather than Hack and Slash but I also wish to play so I will accept what comes.

  10. I'm not looking for world shattering power. A gas mask, KS: Occult, and gas gun would be fine.
