Based upon what I have read, I believe that ship combat works like this:
Roll to hit with weapons.
If successful, roll damage.
Apply damage to shields with any excess going to the hull.
Each time the total, cumulative hull damage exceeds the Critical Threshold (CT), the target takes a system hit. i.e. if the ship has 100 Hull Points and a CT of 20, each increment of 20 results in a critical system hit. (This continues into negative hull points.(Once a ship's Hull Points are reduced to 0 it is disabled. If reduced to negative its starting HP, it is destroyed.
If a 20 is rolled (19 or 20 if the science officer is targeting a system) the target also takes a system hit as long as the shields were breached. Critical hits require hull point damage to occur.
In our combat last night, I believe that we may have scored 3 critical hits with the last round of combat. 2 would have applied to the starboard gun (giving it the malfunctioning status). The 3rd, for exceeding the CT, would been applied to a random system. If weapons was rolled, a random arc would be determined and a condition would be applied to the weapons in that arc. If starboard again, the weapon condition would change to wrecked.

prior to the crits, the ship should have taken no hull damage if i read this bit right..
Delete"Damage Threshold (DT): If an attack deals less damage less
than this value, that damage isn’t counted against the ship’s
total Hull Points."
never mind, the ship did not have a DT.
DeleteGenerally, only very large ships have a DT.
